SARASOTA- Capital City Rowing joined 38 other with school crew teams from around Florida to compete on the waters of the Cooper Creek, Nathan Benderson Park, April 24-25 in the 45th annual Florida Scholastic Rowing Association State Championship. Despite the strong tail-wind that wreaked havoc about 250 meters into the race, but was appreciated by the spectators, Capital City Rowing women’s team showed its competitive edge.

Last year, CCR’s freshman women’s eight took a bronze medal in the finals, just behind the Sarasota Scullers and Episcopal High School. This year, they went home with the gold medal beating out rivals Winter Park High School and Plant High School by open water and smoking Jacksonville Episcopal High School, Orlando Area Rowing Society, and Pine Crest School. Coached by Larry Gowen and coxed by Tori Cohen (Chiles HS), rowers Emma Corry (Lincoln HS, Allanah Rubi-Mooney (Leon HS), Ariana Picciuto (Chiles HS), Onyx Cross (Leon HS), Maria Eggleston (Leon HS), Hailey Townsend (Leon HS), Rebecca Hunter (Chiles HS), and Holly Brooks (Lincoln HS) left everything they had on the water.

CCR’s next challenge will be the Southeast Regional Youth Championship, May 8-9, a qualifying regatta for the US Rowing National Youth Championship in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 12-13.
Racing at the Head of the Charles Regatta is a challenge to both experienced and novice competitors. Every year, crews and scullers race along the many bends of the 3-mile course, navigating through buoys, boats, and bridges in hopes of passing under the bridges and around the other boats without hitting them. The Head of the Charles Regatta is the largest worldwide water event, attracting more than 300,000 spectators along the banks of the Charles River and on the seven bridges that the rowers have to maneuver as they race against the clock.

Capital City Rowing was represented by its Women’s Varsity Four and Men’s Varsity Eight boats. Capital City Rowing soared through the racecourse and successfully maneuvered the beautiful Charles River to the delight of the many Tallahassee fans who traveled to Boston to support their teams, despite the 40-degree temperatures, 18 mph-northeast wind, and 100% precipitation.

Top crew teams from the Southeast competed at this two-day regatta, a 2,000-meter racecourse, in hopes of qualifying for a spot at the US Rowing National Youth Championships in Cincinnati, Ohio June 12-14. CCR won an invitation to this prestigious rowing competition in the men’s eight and the women’s pair events.

In the varsity men’s eight, winning gold medals were coxswain Emily Massey, and rowers Robbie Vezina, Kenny Nickens, John Sweat, Gennaro Scibelli, Logan Jester, Sam Walker, Adam Stephens, and Nathan Rillstone. Of these rowers, Kenny Nickens has been recruited by the University of Pennsylvania, John Sweat by Northeastern University, and Emily Massey by Clemson University’s crew teams. This boat also broke down into two boats to compete in the men’s varsity four A and B boat events, winning gold medals in both of their events. Coxswain Emily Massey went home with three gold medals.

However, the varsity women’s pair was the highlight of the weekend. These two rowers, Brianne Hadar and Morgan Hooks, entered the event with the goal of “just not flipping the boat, which is relatively easy to do in a pair with just two oars,” according to Brianne’s dad, Brian Hadar. “To be accurate, the women’s pair had only practiced 30 minutes together, ever, prior to racing. They caught a crab on the first stroke of the race and quickly found themselves down four or five lengths down to the field. By 1000 meters in, they had rowed through two crews and were in fourth place. In the last 1000 meters, they rowed through the rest and won by four seconds. It was a lot of fun to watch” smiled the varsity women’s coach Brett Tillotson.

CCR’s men’s second varsity eight A boat won a gold medal beating rivals Orlando Area Rowing and Atlanta Junior Rowing Association. This boat included coxswain James Yang, Justin Jarrett, Weber Glusenkamp, Frazier Chiles, Tyler Clayton, David Rodriguez, Ben Williamson, Will Ahnberg, and Chris Jones.

Also winning a gold medal was CCR’s men’s lightweight fours coxed by James Yang with rowers Weber Glusenkamp, Justin Jarrett, Will Ahnberg, and Tyler Clayton. This boat beat rivals Orland Area Rowing and the Sarasota Scullers by 9 to 10 seconds.

CCR’s novice women’s A boat, coxed by Dixie Folsom, won a silver medal in their event. Rowers were Emma Corry, Kristy Schmidt, Susannah Rowan, Mary Faith Pittman, Maria Eggleston, Sally Bruner, Morgan Burns, and Rachel Shaeffer.

CCR’s women’s varsity four won a silver medal in their event beating rivals Gainesville Area Rowing by six seconds. Coxswain Lindsey Laux and rowers Janice Gowen, Onyx Cross, Kelly Thiele, and Eleanor Balogh came back from their first heat with an 8:10.19 time to win the final event with a time of 7:48.93.

Finally, the varsity women’s lightweight eight won a bronze medal in their event. Coxed by Dixie Folsom, with rowers Caroline Cooper, Kristy Schmidt, Emma Corry, Mary Faith, Olivia Cooper, Rachel Shaeffer, Maria Eggleston, and Holly Brooks this boat represents rowers from three different high schools, freshmen on up to seniors.

CCR’s next challenge will be the US Rowing National Youth Championship in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 13-14.

CCR COLLEGE BOUND ROWERS FOR 2009

Several rowers have chosen the colleges and universities they will be attending next Fall. They include:

Rowers from local Tallahassee high schools won a gold medal, two silver medals, and a bronze medal in Sarasota this past weekend. Despite the strong cross-wind that wreaked havoc on the water, but was appreciated by the spectators, Capital City Rowing showed it’s competitive edge.

Winning the gold for a second year in a row for Capital City Rowing (CCR) in the third men’s eight were coxswain Amanda Weber (Leon HS), Michael Sigrist (Chiles HS), Zachary Copeland (Chiles HS), Harlan George (Leon HS) Andrews Bartholomew (Chiles HS), Edward Ruse (Leon HS), Jon Michael Francis (Chiles HS), Jacob Auerbach (Leon HS), and Jake Gwynn ( Leon HS). Rowing against five other Florida crew teams in the finals, they beat out rivals Sarasota Crew and Winter Park High School by 1.10 seconds.

CCR’s freshman women’s eight took a bronze medal in the finals, just behind the Sarasota Scullers and Episcopal High School. The men’s first and second varsity eights both took silver medals in some of the closest races of the weekend.

CCR’s next challenge will be the Southeast Regional Youth Championship, May 9-10, a qualifying regatta for the US Rowing National Youth Championship in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 13-14. For crew lists and more results, check our Regatta Page.

CCR Brings Home All The T-Shirts From Florida Sprints League Championship!

ORLANDO, FL - Inaugurated in 2006, the Florida Sprints League Championship has been dominated for 2 years by Winter Park High School until last Saturday, when Capital City Rowing’s First and Third Men’s Varsity Eight went home with first place finishes. Second place went to CCR’s Second Men’s Eight, Third Women’s Eight, and the Men’s Four. The Third Men’s Eight-B tied with Winter Park for third place. Teams in attendance were Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, Boone High School, Edgewater High School, Lake Brantley High School, Miami Rowing Club, Orlando Area Rowing Society, Plant High School, Sarasota Crew, Sebastian River High School, and Winter Park High School.

This event is unique in that in lieu of medals or trophies, first place rowers are given a team t-shirt from each of the rowers of the opposing boats. These rowers “give them the shirt off their backs,” which is where this saying originated. This can really add up, as CCR’s first place finishers went home with a total of nine t-shirts each!

Florida Sprints League Championship is the culmination of the spring season’s dual and tri-meets for some of the Florida youth rowing teams and clubs. The standard sprint race distance is 2000 meters, 1500 for the junior age division, and usually has six shells racing against each other in their separate designated lanes that buoys may or may not be marked. These races can take anywhere from 5 ½ to 8 ½ minutes depending on boat class, weather conditions, water current and the physical condition and experience of the rowers. There was a gusty cross headwind and somewhat cloudy day at Turkey Lake in Bill Frederick Park, Orlando, making the weather ideal for spectators.

Capital City Rowing heads to Sarasota’s Cooper Creek, North Metro Park the last weekend in April for the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association State Championship to compete against 29 of Florida’s rowing teams and clubs. CCR will participate in the Southeast Regional Championship at Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, TN May 9 and 10 to compete against all youth rowers in the southeast. Select rowers will continue on to the Youth National Championship at Lake Harsha in Cincinnati, OH June 19-21. In the sport of rowing, races classify into divisions: men’s (M), women’s (W), heavyweight (HWT) or open, lightweight (LWT), etc. The divisions divide into 8+’s, 4+’s, and so on. For a typical regatta, you might see separate races scheduled for M8+, W8+, W4+ down to W1x and M1x. There may be separate heavyweight and lightweight divisions. Lightweights may require a weigh-in before the start of the regatta.

A freshman boat will only contain freshman, a novice boat will contain only rowers in their first year of rowing. The first eight is typically the fastest boat in the fleet, second eight the next fastest, etc. However, eights compete against other eights in the same classification, allowing all rowers to compete and be successful.

A "+" is a coxed sweep boat, a"-" is an un-coxed sweep boat (aka "straight"), and an "x" is a sculling boat. Sweep rowing is one oar per rower, sculling is two oars per rower. Most eights are coxed boats, fours and doubles can go either way, and singles are usually un-coxed. Remember, the coxswain is the person who steers the shell and urges the rowers on during practices and in a race. A knowledgeable coxswain can also serve as a coach for the rowers and can be the difference between winning and losing a race.

CCR’s next regatta takes them to Orlando for the Florida Sprints League Henley Regatta on Turkey Lake Saturday April 10th. They will race against Florida’s high school rowing clubs and teams as a culmination of the sprint season. Correspondant: Christine Anne Minardi
